Good article, but it seems like you can chalk up almost all of those problems to the experience level of whomever is spraying the foam. Spray foam isn't an inherently bad product, but it's pretty easy to botch if the hired company is inexperienced. Fiberglass may be foolproof to install, but then again it has a terrible R-Value compared to a good spray foam. People just need to get referrals and do their homework whenever they research a spray foam contractor.

The deposition efficiency is typically low for alloy powders, and the window of process parameters and suitable powder sizes is narrow. To accelerate powders to higher velocity, finer powders (<20 micrometers) are used. It is possible to accelerate powder particles to much higher velocity using a processing gas having high speed of sound (helium instead of nitrogen). However, helium is costly and its flow rate, and thus consumption, is higher. To improve acceleration capability, nitrogen gas is heated up to about 900 °C. As a result, deposition efficiency and tensile strength of deposits increase.[1]

Building code uses two different terms to describe barriers that protect insulation and prevent them from catching fire. The first is called a thermal barrier, which is a poorly chosen word. Typically, scientists and builders refer to insulation as a thermal barrier. Most people would think of a thermal barrier as something that keeps heat in. However, in building code, thermal barrier essentially refers to 1/2-inch drywall, though the definition can get more complicated than that.
Ignition barriers include six permissible materials. An ignition barrier can be 1/4-inch plywood or structural panels, 1 1/2-inch mineral fiber insulation, 1/4 inch hardboard, corrosion resistant steel at least .016 inches thick, 3/8-inch gypsum board, or 3/8- inch particle board. These sizes are the minimum; code officials will approve of thicker versions of any of these six materials as ignition barriers. Like thermal barriers, equivalent materials that have been shown to have equivalent fire resistance are acceptable. Spray foam insulation helps lower utility costs because it blocks heat and cold from the outdoors. Recent studies by the U.S. Department of Energy state that around 40 percent of all energy is lost through poor insulation. Spray foam insulation is able to insulate homes at least 50 percent more than traditional insulation products. Spray foam insulation can also provide protection against moisture, which otherwise leads to the unwanted development of mold and mildew. And it can also be used for noise reduction as well. In fact, spray foam is good for homes and buildings in which outdoor noise can be a distraction.
 This stuff works perfectly! We'll see how long it holds up on my nicely prepped paint on my black 1996 Jeep Cherokee. I first hand washed it, then used Meguiars Clay Bar kit on it, then compounded it using Meguiars Ultimate Compound, then polished it using Meguiars polish, then used wax and grease remover to remove any oily residue from the previous steps, then applied the Mother's CMX using a microfiber foam hand applicator to spread one spray at a time evenly across the paint... Let it sit for a few minutes to bond with the paint surface, then used a really soft microfiber towel that came with my clay bar kit to buff off the dried powder residue to a perfect shine!! It wiped off very easily and then let it sit to cure for 24 hours without getting wet... It looks flawless on my fresh black paint! And water falls right off of it like all the other great brand ceramic coatings!! Highly recommend it especially for the price and the big bottle... This stuff has a very strong smell to it (must be good!), and is completely white like milk inside it if you unscrew the cap and have a look at it... I'm very satisfied, this was my first time ever using a ceramic coating before and it worked exactly how they claimed and advertised in their video Ads on FACEBOOK Coating Services
Charles: That photo is closed-cell SPF, and it's not sprayed perfectly uniformly. As long as it has the minimum thickness required (3" on a ceiling here in the Atlanta area), it should be fine. I've discussed some problems with SPF installations in the articles listed in the Related Articles section above. This photo is from about 10 years ago, though, and has no ignition barrier.  
In plasma spraying process, the material to be deposited (feedstock) — typically as a powder, sometimes as a liquid,[2] suspension [3] or wire — is introduced into the plasma jet, emanating from a plasma torch. In the jet, where the temperature is on the order of 10,000 K, the material is melted and propelled towards a substrate. There, the molten droplets flatten, rapidly solidify and form a deposit. Commonly, the deposits remain adherent to the substrate as coatings; free-standing parts can also be produced by removing the substrate. There are a large number of technological parameters that influence the interaction of the particles with the plasma jet and the substrate and therefore the deposit properties. These parameters include feedstock type, plasma gas composition and flow rate, energy input, torch offset distance, substrate cooling, etc. Insulation Spray Coating
There have been a few mentions of intumescent coatingsabove, and it would be helpful to elaborate on them. Intumescent coating is a type of paint that will bubble when it is exposed to heat or flames. The bubbles act as a barrier that is relatively flame resistant. The bubbled coating delays the ignition of the spray foaminsulation. Because of this, intumescent coatings have become more common in building and construction. Insulation Spray Coating
Charles spoke of a "huge problem" of convection within cavities not filled with foam. This is a false assertion. The trillions of trapped air cells in foam insulation prevent heat transfer at a rate that would cause those problems. Also the wood framing members are relatively good insulators themselves unless the wood is particularly dense. Convection currents against foam insulation are not the problem he asserts. He also said" the homeowner is literally pissing money away if he pays for this spray foam job - or any job like it - for he will only be gaining a marginal amount of insulation effectiveness." This is a ludicrous statement. The structure pictured above will have a very effective performance despite his assertions. My only concern is humidity. Closed cell foam does not permit moisture migration and trapped moisture could be a problem, especially if the AC is not running due to moderate to cold temperatures.

Whether or not an intumescent coating, or even a thermal or ignition barrier, is needed often depends on the type of spray foaminsulation that builders use. Many closed cell foam sprays are already sufficiently fire resistant and need no additional barriers. Ultimately, whether or not you need an ignition barrier or thermal barrier varies depending on location and materials. You should check with your local code official to ensure that your insulation work is up to code.


Plasma transferred wire arc (PTWA) is another form of wire arc spray which deposits a coating on the internal surface of a cylinder, or on the external surface of a part of any geometry. It is predominantly known for its use in coating the cylinder bores of an engine, enabling the use of Aluminum engine blocks without the need for heavy cast iron sleeves. A single conductive wire is used as "feedstock" for the system. A supersonic plasma jet melts the wire, atomizes it and propels it onto the substrate. The plasma jet is formed by a transferred arc between a non-consumable cathode and the type of a wire. After atomization, forced air transports the stream of molten droplets onto the bore wall. The particles flatten when they impinge on the surface of the substrate, due to the high kinetic energy. The particles rapidly solidify upon contact. The stacked particles make up a high wear resistant coating. The PTWA thermal spray process utilizes a single wire as the feedstock material. All conductive wires up to and including 0.0625" (1.6mm) can be used as feedstock material, including "cored" wires. PTWA can be used to apply a coating to the wear surface of engine or transmission components to replace a bushing or bearing. For example, using PTWA to coat the bearing surface of a connecting rod offers a number of benefits including reductions in weight, cost, friction potential, and stress in the connecting rod. This is in great contrast to my friend's experience. Her attic spaces were sprayed and the foam is actually pretty, and I was in her attic 6-7 days after it was sprayed and could hardly smell anything when I stuck my face up to the foam. And she did not have to clean up one speck of dust during or after the spraying. I got the name/number of the guy from her who managed her attic project, but between the time he did my house and the time he did her house, he was let go from the company who did her attic and hired by another company. He assured me everything would be the same, etc., etc., and I had no reason to believe anything had changed, but the sprayers who did my house later admitted they had never sprayed an attic before and I also found out that the foam used in my attic was from a different manufacturer. Neither my friend nor I had any idea this guy was with different company then, until the week after they filled my attic with off ratio foam, and my home with toxic vapors.   Spray Coating
